happy new year !! I've only been here for a few months but I hope the interest lasts for at least 2026!! It Was Never About Him

Miya stared ahead at the wall in front of him. He was supposed to be doing his school work, but instead it lay scattered on the desk in front of him, not a single question answered.
He’d told himself he could do it at the start of the school year. That he could push through one week after the next. That he could do his work and earn top grades as always. That he could continue to skate at a professional level. That he could stay on top of all his responsibilities at home. That he could keep up his innocent, wide eyed innocent and sweet school boy persona.
But he couldn’t.
His parents used to be proud of him. He knew that, even though after every skating match he won they’d say that his opponents were just weaker than normal. That the judges were going to easy on them.
He knew they were proud of them, even when they’d read his report card and ask why he’d gotten over a 100% on a subject, only to say the teacher had been lax. That he was good at bullshitting on his essays.
He knew they were proud of him even when they’d tell him he needed to go out with friends more and get off his tech. That he needed to do more and look into jobs. That he needed to expand his life more because what he excelled at was never enough.
He knew they were proud of him because they always told him before mentioning the others. They would say so before the inevitable “but”. That one word which would always, without fail, follow whenever they mentioned those few words he craved more than anything.
But they hadn’t said those two tiny words for years.
But it still carried over, right? It had to. Except that it didn’t anymore.
He wasn’t getting his chores done anymore and arguments or yelling would always ensue.
His grades were dropping and they always voiced their concern before getting mad at him.
He wasn’t attending as many skating tournaments anymore and kept messing up in practice. HIs coach would shake his head and tell him to get back on his feet. That he could do better because he always used to be.
No one cared that he wouldn’t shower for weeks. No one cared that he barely had the energy to play his games anymore. No one cared he either slept all the time or none at all. No one cared that he never ate anymore.
Because those things didn’t matter because he didn’t matter. Really, when had he, himself, ever mattered?
His grades mattered. His skating mattered. His chores mattered. But he didn’t. It was that simple. Always had been.
Stupid stupid Miya. Around Reki, Langa, and his skater dads he had deceived himself. Had let his stupid little brain think that maybe he did matter. That maybe his feelings mattered. And look where that had gotten him.
Missing classes because he wasn’t self harming anymore to spur himself on. Not driving himself to exhaustion skating because maybe he should take care of himself. Not doing his chores because maybe he needed to be around his friends instead of being left in his head.
Healthy coping mechanisms his ass. They’d destroyed his life. Everything was so much better when he’d pushed himself to the point of self harm and throwing up his own meals. Everything had been so much better then.
Because people were proud of his achievements and by effect, tolerated him. Tolerated him of all people because of the benefits they’d reap by being close to him.
He snapped himself out of his daze, out of staring at that wall in front of him and yanked out his drawer, a psychotic smile coming over his face as his finger skimmed over razor blades.
The old Miya was back and it was time for the show to go on.
It was time to be successful again.
And if self harm was the key, the crutch he had to lean on to get his way, then so be it.

When I was in primary school there was a poster in my class, that read “With a happy mind comes a happy life” and today it makes so much sense to me. Having healthy mind has become more like a necessity for us now. When I was younger, I would stand in the front of the mirror and stare at myself appreciating how amazing I thought I looked unbothered by what anyone said. All of us were like that once, weren’t we? So why did it suddenly become not okay to love ourselves the way we look?
According to a survey 91% women and 40% men are unhappy with their bodies and resort to dieting to achieve their ideal body shape and 58% of college aged girls feel pressured to be a certain weight. One of most important influences on body dissatisfaction and appearance focus in adolescent girls is how appearance focused their peers are.
I always had interest in interschool co-curricular activities but never took part in any. Like any other normal teenager I was always concerned about how I looked, whether or not I was socially acceptable. We are in a generation where “how to get thin” videos get more hits than “how to stay healthy”. The problem was never our body but the negative ‘body image’ and the way women’s body is objectified and distorted in media. Teens usually define their self-worth and body image by their appearance. People today aren’t only suffering because of the unattainable ways by which beauty is defined but because THEY are being defined by beauty. So rather than working to make sure more women’s body are viewed as valuable, we are focused on making sure women are valued as more than bodies to view. According to Calogero, self-objectification explains the psychological process by which women internalize people’s objectification of their bodies, resulting in them constantly criticizing their own bodies.
In school, I was told “you have short legs”, “your height stopped increasing after the 6th grade haha” , “please lose some weight Swadha, you look like a teddy bear’’. But teddy bears are cute aren’t they? Being surrounded by a bunch of judgmental people, I started looking at myself differently. I started looking at myself how they told me to. In this image obsessed culture I was convinced that I wasn’t ‘good enough’ and by good enough I mean “thin enough”. 6/10 girls choose not to do something because they think they do not look good enough and tend to spend most of their time and mental efforts on appearance at an expense of all the aspects of their identities.
When I entered college, I took part in our college’s annual fest because I did not want to make the same mistake I made back in school and trust me it has been one of the best decisions of my life. During this, I met a girl who was also looking for the same department as me. As we walked she told me “they better finish the meeting fast or I’ll be late for my dance class”. Not that I had anything to do with her dancing but the fact that she was so excited to dance even though she was a lot more chubbier than me left me thinking. She continued telling me how she had made it to the Drama Team and that she was looking forward to all her performances. Performing in front of a live audience has always topped my bucket list from as long as I remember. Despite the love for dancing that I had , I always avoided attending my dance classes in school, and whenever I did, I stood in a corner where I wouldn’t be noticed. All this only because I had a negative body image.
But did I overcome it? Yes, I did. And today I write this because I understand how it feels to be insecure about the way you look and what it takes to overcome it. So back to when I met that girl, I spent the rest of the day thinking “why can’t I do it if she can”. Its then when I realized that she was so much more healthier than I was because she didn’t stress about how she ‘looked’ while performing , the only thing that mattered to her was her PERFORMANCE. That’s when I paused and thought about how my body image had robbed all the opportunities I had during school. That is when I decided to give my 100% in whatever I do. Initially when we started with the fest preparations I knew I had to stand out and make place for myself and this time I had no space for any kind of negativity. However it wasn’t as smooth and easy as it looks, there were times when I had to speak in front of 300 people with my voice hardly being audible to people which did drai my self-confidence at times but there were also highs. I had promised to work hard, I did and it did pay off. All my heads always praised my work and it made my heart so full that there was no room for “how I looked”.
You know I used to practice these little things like, I kept appreciating myself every time I got to. Even if it was as small as “I feel cute today”. You shouldn’t have to ‘believe’ that you are beautiful but you should ‘KNOW’that you are. My goal is to be my younger self again, being able to admire my body regardless its shape, size or colour. That’s the kind of love your body deserves. I believe in you!

Adam Prompts
Monster Hunting
Just because it wasn’t destined didn’t mean it shouldn’t die. He felt the shock run up his arm as metal met bone but it did not weaken his grip. His shoulder and wrist would ache the next day and he would be nagged for poor form from his tutors. Right now, that didn’t matter. The thing with fur and teeth fell heavily into the leaves and twigs of the forest floor. Only half the battle was done. He sheathed the sword, taking a single moment to feel the exhaustion that very almost set him trembling. Then he gritted his teeth, set his jaw and grabbed two of the creature’s limbs. He began dragging it slowly, the moonlight luckily bright enough to illuminate the winter woods. Soon, the sound of the rushing river crept in. He made his way to the bank, sweat trickling down his back and into the waistband of his jeans. With a final heave, he rolled the body into the water and it was borne away. Time to go home.
The walk was familiar. The woods did not frighten him, even though he knew exactly what they held. He also knew he was the most frightening thing in here. He had fought and had won against so many creatures. Things with teeth, things with claws, things with malice, things with instinct. He could not remember a time he had felt something as mundane as fear. Maybe he didn’t have the capacity. Maybe it has been carved out of him, along with so many other things. In being the defender of humanity, he had had his own taken. So it goes. So was right. How could he miss what he had never had?

Being given his first sword
It was far too heavy. So much heavier than even the best of the wooden ones he had been working with. He almost immediately let the tip hit the floor in surprise, only managing to just about catch it. It shone, not with any supernatural light, but with the glow of well forged metal and bright spring sunlight. It wasn’t a birthday present, they didn’t do birthdays, but it felt like it marked something all the same. Age? An intent? Something confirming he couldn’t back out? He wasn’t sure. His young mind only knew its gravity.
Later, in bed, he draws it out again, laying it on the covers. Now it was lit by moonlight. It didn’t seem as brilliant here. The edge seemed sharper. It didn’t look like a toy or something from a fairy story. It looked like a weapon used to kill people. It looked deadly. He could see now that it would also bite the hand that wielded it, if they didn’t learn fast enough. Bruised knuckles against the hand guard, cut shins, aching arms.
He didn’t love his first sword. Not yet. For a long time. For a while, it represented nothing but endless days of physical labour, of a future he couldn’t escape, of every weird thing about his life. He hadn’t learnt to love the ache yet, hadn’t learnt to love what he could find, in absence of anything else. For now it was just a sword.

Training sessions
It being pretend didn’t mean it didn’t hurt. Even gentle swords still left bruises. Hard falls still rocked his bones. Chain mail could still graze skin and let’s face it, his tutors didn’t exactly go easy on him. But it hurting didn’t mean he didn’t enjoy it. His only options were to hate it or to love it as it certainly wasn’t going away, so he chose to love it. The heat and sweat that came from exerting himself. The joy that came from the simple act of your body obeying you perfectly. Even the small sharp shocks of pain, reminding him he was alive. Most of all it was the knowledge that he was getting better, this was making him better. Who didn’t like to be the best at everything?
Nowadays, his training sessions didn’t exactly challenge him. He had outstripped every adult on the commune by time he was fourteen in terms of swordsmanship. His hand to hand combat caught up once his growth spurt hit. He still sparred of course, but sometimes it felt like his partners were only just a step up from a mannequin. That was the main reason he patrolled - well, that and the immediate danger monsters posed to human life obviously. No better training than things that actually wanted to kill you but were not mandated by fate to do so. It gave you the sense of security that fostered confidence while not removing the risk he could lose a limb. Balance.
Which, speaking of, he did lack in some areas. His intellectual training had not gone nearly so well. He found it hard to sit still, to think and be quiet. When he managed to focus, he learned lessons easily but getting him to that point was a battle in of itself. The irony was, of course, that he was actually doing rather well in his lessons. But he had no basis for comparison nor any other pupils to fail with him. When you were raised with the expectation of perfection, anything less was an automatic failure. Adam didn’t like to fail.
No, scratch that, he didn’t know how to fail. How not to feel the burning pit of shame suddenly take root in his stomach and blacken the world around him. He knew logically not everyone felt like this - how could he learn that? How could he achieve such lightness? And should this even be a skill he learnt? Maybe accepting small failures was indeed, the first step to failing the big things, the things that mattered.
If there was one thing he was not allowed to do, it was fail at the big thing.

First time being part of the outside world
He clung to David’s hand, eyes wide and round. He didn’t know there could be so many people in the world. Old people. Young people. Black people. White people. Rich people. Poor people. Rude, polite. Laughing, serious, tall, short, fat, thin. Of course he had seen many of these types back at the commune, they were a mixed bunch, but never had he seen the sheer number and diversity combine like this. And they were loud. He almost wanted to clap his hands over his ears. He didn’t, instead determinedly eavesdropping on every conversation he could, desperate to know about each and every person that passed.
Who were they? What did they love, what did they hate? What were they doing in town? What had they just bought? What were their families like? Did they have sons like him? He didn’t have the faintest idea what normal people did and so that mundane life seemed as exotic as if it had come from another universe altogether.
Toys shone in store windows like gold in Aladdin’s cave. Sweet smells came from bakeries and smells so delicious his stomach rumbled came from restaurants with names he couldn’t pronounce. Posters covered walls, promising action movies, romcoms, horror. Adam had never seen a movie - training videos just didn’t count. This world was impossibly bright with too much to learn in it. He felt over-awed, every nerve jangling. He held on to David’s hand tight enough to leave red impressions of small fingers on the skin. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to be in this world or without it entirely.

Destiny vs what Adam wants
He wanted to go to parties and kiss girls. He wanted to learn how to dance and drink too much and be hungover the next day. He wanted to scrape his knees playing football. He wanted to have pathetic, stupid fights where nobody was at risk of dying. He wanted to have hobbies - photography or video games or some stupid sport. He wanted to excel at PE because he was good at it, not because his blood dictated he be fit. He wanted to read fantasy novels and not have shivers down his spine. Hell, he wanted to watch horror movies and be scared.
What did he want when he grew up? Well. He didn’t know. He explored images in his mind and none of them fit. He couldn’t imagine himself living to be an adult. Name one hero that lived to that age. Want was out of the picture. So instead, he tried on lifestyles he saw elsewhere.
Him, with kids. With a house and a wife and a dog. He’d have a boring job but a family that loved him. They’d go camping or on holidays and he’d go to parent evenings and tut at grades and drink instant coffee.
Him, with a girlfriend. They explored the world together, had painfully cool jobs. They had friends that read the New Yorker and dyed their hair. He’d get tattoos and smoke weed and read novels by obscure russian authors.
Him, in university. Studying history. Late nights revising, the taste of energy drinks and cheap beer. Making friends he would never speak to again. Talking to professors, making lectures, attending seminars hung over.
Him as a detective. Him as a cleaner. Him as a librarian. Him as a football star. A hundred possibilities, each one exactly as unrealistic as the next. Each unattainable. Each destined to stay as what they were, a story. Not his story at all.

Back to basics, motivation in the classroom.
What is the key purpose of differentiation? A common answer throughout my reading is to allow students to access the lesson content, and ensure all students learn effectively and efficiently. That all are motivated to learn.
Motivation has always been an interesting subject to me, and is probably one of the most intriguing psychological aspects of teaching. Fail to differentiate and students may be demotivated by boredom, a lack/too much or a challenge, or a lack of ability to comprehend to subject. Dörnyei speaking at lengths about the how important it if for EFL students to be motivated, due to the challenge of developing another language. Providing interest in order to learn is indeed a learning need that the teacher must meet.
This essay will focus primarily on Dörnyei‘s ‘Process-oriented approach’ on moitvation in second language acquisition, how it relate to my previous reading and my teaching.

Dörnyei interestingly breaks motivation down into three stages, choice (preactional) motivation,(actional) executive motivation, and (postactional) motivational retrospection. The first stage designed to elicit motivation via setting goals, attitudes and expectations. The second aiming on mainting motivation via quality of learning experience, social influences and knowledge of self-regulation strategies. The final stage is a reflective stage, working on self-confidence, external feedback and grades.
Viewing motivation in stages is something that has never occurred to me. To my current knowledge in this literature, I have not seen motivation presented in stages such as this. Often it is presented more as a singular entity. However it does provide an effective working model in implementing motivation techniques in the classroom. In addition, it can aid me in effectively planning for motivation more directly. This could possibly be effective in being more tatical at aiming at the students who find being motivated in the classroom topic more challenging.
The second part of Dörnyei’s work I want to discuss is Dörnyei and Csizér’s (1998) list of motivational strategies.
· Set a personal example with your own behavior/ Pleasant relaxed atmosphere This relates to developing a positive learning environment via a positive and growth mindset from Carol Ann Thomlison’s work. Positivity has been a key focus of my teaching style. Originating from my musical performance background, I was more than aware of a performer’s ability to influence the tone of a room. Books such as How to talk so Little Kids will Listen (Faber ,2017) and Getting the buggers to behave (2010) were great influences in how I adopted this behavior. Positivity is certainly a strength of mine, but certainly something I could write more about in a later on
· Present tasks properly
During my initial teacher training, modelling with likely probably one of the biggest challenges of me to develop. Present a task clearly, modelling it showing that students have clear idea of teacher’s expectations is incredibly important. I often do this by setting a time limit, re-addressing classroom rules if nearby, and maybe testing student’s understanding of the topic by having a student reply back to the teacher of what is expected.
· Good relationships / Learner self confidence
This is supported by a lot of literature, but a specific example would be Count Me In by Rose, R. and Shevlin, M. Good relationships with most of my students is certainly a frequent aim of all students, however I would accept this as an area of me to certainly improve on. Learning names has always been a challenge, especially Vietnamese names that prove tricky for westerners to pronounce.
· Interesting classes
A significant amount of education literature will emphasis the importance of learner engagement via interest. Again Carol Ann Thomlinson speaks intensively of many different ways of achieving this. I will write more specifically on creating interest and engagement in class, but in summary feel this is an area of strength. A recent critique of my teaching was that my pacing could be slightly faster and snappier to avoid students becoming disengaged. Normally I achieve this via relating the topic to a interest of the student, providing a novel or playful way of practicing, and (probably the most important) ensuring that students can access the learning from start to finish. Students find it hard to be interesting in something too easy or too difficult.
· Promote learner autonomy
Learner autonomy is another point that is heavily supported by many authors in educational literature. Carol Ann Thomlinson and David A, Sousa (2011) talk about the importance of encouraging independent studies. Other discuss that when students take ownership of their own learning, it gives them control and increase academic performance significantly. I think this is certainly an area I could be much more conscious of. Asides from encouraging self reflection, I admit this an area on reflection I feel is lacking from my teaching practice. Although I do have learners self-assess and set a target every lesson, students often don’t come back to meet these targets which doesn’t aim their learning autonomy.
· Personalize the learning process
One of the ways I aim to achieve this is via open the application stage of a class. Giving an element of freedom and encourage student’s to have fun and produce work in a ways that works for them. Some common examples are poster making, writing a letter about the content learnt, or recording a speech about it. This meets a variety of specific learning needs
However one area I feel I have not focused on is flexible grouping to meet student preference in how one wants to learnt. Even how I would arrange an activity in effectively arrange and incorporate flexible grouping seems like a challenge at this current moment. This has highlighted an area for devleopment.
· Increase the learner’s goal-orientedness
Dörnyei and Ushioda (2011) say
· Goals should be clear and specific
· Challenging and realistic
As referring back to promoting learner autonomy, the targets I set with the students I do not often refer back to in class. They are clear and specific, but they can’t be realistic if I do not address them later. There is not started completion date neither.
In conclusion, Dörnyei has a habit of making complex situations accessible for teachers in the classroom. It has shown that there is still some basic areas in which I could improve on in my teaching to continue to meet learner needs. The topics I have addressed here I will return and focus on more directly. This has certainly highlighted those areas for me to work on.
